RHEMA Speak to Hear software

RHEMA is a software designed to help people with speech disability. Thiruvalluvar, the Tamil Sage of the 1st Century CE had said:

செல்வத்துள் செல்வம் செவிச்செல்வம் அச்செல்வம்
செல்வத்துள் எல்லாம் தலை

In English it means :

Wealth of wealth is wealth acquired be ear attent;
Wealth mid all wealth supremely excellent. “ Kural No : 411

It is unfortunate that nearly 360 million of our compatriots cannot hear and because of that they are unable to use their vocal chords to communicate properly with others. Thanks to technology, with some effort it is possible to give them an opportunity to express themselves, audibly. It is also our endeavor to provide them a solution that would allow them to hear the feed back of their utterances and also what others say.

This software is the first version, with limited words in Tamil for them to practice. We have tested it with the help of a school and atleast two children were able to pick up some words, with just a little practice. It is our hope that with more words and a tablet pc, they can help themselves to practice continuously and attain a level of proficiency that would make life easier on them.

We are releasing this software now, as we hope that it would encourage more talented developers and designers to put in their expertise and make this a workable idea with out any language and regional barriers, so that it can be useful to all the 360 million disabled without any cost.

We acknowledge with thanks the co-operation given us by Mrs Latha Rajendran, Principal, Dr. MGR School for the speech and hearing impaired, Chennai for allowing us to test and train this software to the children under the supervision of her staff.

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. The art of simplicity is genius. Simple people see as simple what others see as complex. In classical Hebrew, the language of the Bible, the word for simple and forperfect are the same, because perfection lies in simplicity not in complexity.”  David Lapin – Lead by Greatness

The system that we have evolved using existing and available technologies is simple and easy. It is easy to train the disabled irrespective of their language and age. A disabled person can easily train to identify the words spoken to him from any direction, such as being addressed from a direction not in their visual coverage, recognize the voice and aptly reply or respond.

We do have facilities to train, test and demonstrate the capability of the system before we launch it as a Free Licensed product.

The Impact

Let us for a moment imagine that we are in a large auditorium with people around, looking at us and talking (may be good or bad things).  We see their lips move, the smile on their face but cannot understand anything, how would we feel.  Continued living as such, would isolate us from humanity and make us live in a solitary space among a crowded society. Nothing can be more dreadful and loathsome as being locked up in isolation.  That is exactly what people with hearing disability undergo.

This project adds value to us who live and connect with people, because it helps bring others who are disconnected into the world family. Every dollar that is spent to enhance the lives of these would help us link another human being to the chain of humanity and richly reward the society by adding more hands to contribute to the betterment of the society we live.

“Four things come not back. The spoken word, the sped arrow, the past life, and the neglected opportunity” – Arabic Proverb.  Here is an opportunity for us to make life better for 360 million of our fellow humans.

Other Ways You Can Help

“If your real desire is to be good, there is no need to wait for the money before you do it; you can do it now, this very moment, and just where you are. And that’s all there is to it”. – James Allen

Making people aware, connecting us with Institutions for the Hearing Disabled, Teachers who specialze in teaching them, persons with the disability will be very helpful.
